Sexology is the field of science that focuses on human sexuality.
A sexologist may be a medical doctor with a specialisation in sexology, a psychologist or psychotherapist holding a certificate in clinical sexology issued by the Polish Society of Sexology (PTS), or a psychologist specialising in psychosexology.
A medical sexologist conducts a thorough diagnostic assessment and, based on the results, provides appropriate pharmacological treatment. They may also recommend individual or couples therapy as a complementary form of support.
A psychosexologist / clinical sexologist (PTS-certified psychologist) / clinical sexologist psychotherapist (PTS-certified) provides treatment for sexological disorders of psychological origin, conducting individual or couples therapy.
The most common issues treated in a sexologist’s office include:
- erectile dysfunction,
- premature ejaculation,
- lack of sexual desire,
- disorders of sexual desire and arousal,
- orgasm disorders,
- dyspareunia,
- non-organic vaginismus,
- excessive sexual drive.
Sexologists also provide assessment of gender incongruence and gender-affirming therapy, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of paraphilic disorders (disorders of sexual preferences).
